The Patrol Division is comprised 28 full-time officers and one part-time officer. These officers are distributed into five units which form a uniformed law enforcement group with the responsibility for responding to calls for service, traffic safety, and strategic proactive law enforcement. Four of the units work rotating shifts and one unit works a fixed power shift. The four rotating shifts are allocated a sergeant, corporal, and five officers. The power shift is allocated four officers. These units provide law enforcement services to our community 24 hours a day seven days a week.
Within this group we also have a Bicycle Unit comprised of 10 officers. The bicycle officers are distributed between the shifts, and are deployed during the warmer months of the year. These officers target high crime areas, and assist with community policing initiatives.
Typical duties associated with the uniformed units include response to calls for service, strategic traffic, parking, criminal code enforcement, traffic safety initiatives, investigation of traffic crashes, investigation of crimes, order maintenance duties during special events, natural disasters, other special circumstances, and community policing initiatives. We also work cooperatively with many local, state, and federal resources. In addition, we work closely with the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney for the administration of justice. We emphasize professionalism, team work, information sharing, and a strategic proactive approach to the enforcement of laws and community involvement. The division is managed and supervised in a cooperative team environment by the captain, sergeants, and corporals.
