The Teen Pregnancy Prevention Division of the Office on Youth strives to prevent teen pregnancies and risky behavior among community youth through a variety of programming that educates teens, parents, and the community about the emotional, physical and financial risks and responsibilities of sexual activity and parenthood. The main goal of these programs is to promote the postponement of initial sex and to discontinue voluntary sexual intercourse until marriage. The following is a description of programs and services they offer.

The Baby Think It Over is a life-like infant simulator designed to educate youth about the demands of being a parent. Throughout the timeframe that the student has the baby (usually over a week-end), the simulator cries at random times during the day and evening when it needs care, which requires the student to tend to the infant for up to thirty minutes. Each "Baby" is equipped with an electronic box that records how well the infant is cared for, including abuse events, neglect events, and the total number of minutes that the infant cries. Currently, the Baby Think It Over program is administered to all seventh grade students and select high school students. This program is currently offered to 7th graders, but is exploring transitioning to 8th graders (and high schoolers) in the 2006/2007 school year.
Vision of You is a ten session decision-making program, designed to aid participants in exploring their lives and examining how their lives would be different if they were to become a teen parent. Each session of the program focuses on a different topic, ranging from family to communication to money management, ultimately relating that topic to sex and its consequences. Vision of You helps youth to recognize that abstaining from sexual activity is a viable alternative and the most effective way to avoid pregnancy or infection from a sexually transmitted disease. This program is offered during the school day as a part of Family life and health classes and uses the science-based Game Plan (middle school) and Navigator (high school) curriculums. A modified version of this program is also offered in the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Detention Center.
(Target: 4th and 5th Grade Students)
The Waynesboro Teen Pregnancy Prevention Office coordinates the Family Life Education program for the Waynesboro Public Schools and teaches the 4th and 5th grade classes. Office staff also offer support to the health teachers at the middle and high school and teach when requested. In addition, Office staff conduct parent education meetings.
(Target: 4th and 5th grade girls and female adults)
Girl/Guy Talk is a puberty workshop designed to encourage young adolescents and their adult role models to openly discuss matters related to growing up in today's world, including sex and puberty. After Family Life Education is completed, the workshops are scheduled to invite the adolescents and adults to revisit information from Family Life and address teen pregnancy issues. Girl/Guy Talk gives adult role models a forum for talking and sharing personal experiences with young teenage girls, in an effort to provide accurate information, increase their comfort level, and encourage future discussions.
Teen pregnancy prevention staff conduct this program in all area high schools, encouraging youth to sign a commitment card to abstinence on prom night (and beyond). Incentives are distributed to those who sign a card.
