Charlie Coker Captain Coker’s law enforcement career started in 1975.He attended the Police Academy in May 1975 and was promoted to Corporal in 1979 as an Assistant Patrol Shift Commander.  In 1980, he was assigned to develop and implement the department’s field training program. Having continued coming up through the ranks, he has held the positions of Shift Commander as a Sergeant, Division Commander as a Lieutenant, and presently a Division Commander as Captain. He oversees the operations of the department in the absence of the Chief and Deputy Chief. He is also certified as a police instructor, a critical incident peer debriefer, the departments training coordinator, and a hostage negotiator. Captain Coker is a member of the Virginia Chiefs of Police Association, Blue Ridge Chiefs Association, International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Virginian Emergency Management Association.

He has worked side by side with many of his co-workers which he considers the most dedicated and professional officers and office staff around. He has proudly served the department and the citizens of Waynesboro for over thirty years and continues to work closely with other City employees. He earned his Associates in Arts and Sciences Degree from Blue Ridge Community College, graduated from (PELS) Police Executive Leadership School from the University of Richmond, and graduated from ( LEADS) Leading Educating And Developing Program from the University of Virginia Weldon Cooper Center For Public Service.

Captain Coker is currently working with and managing the Department Support Services Division.


The Support Services Division is not only responsible for its own operations but, supports the other division within the department as well. A major role of the division is to assist the department in accomplishing its goals and mission. The division is comprised of a staff that includes; a staff Sergeant, 2 School Resource Officers, a Crime Prevention Officer, a Police Technologist, a Parking Enforcement Officer, an Animal Control Officer, an Evidence Room Officer, a Processing Officer, 3 Desk Clerks, an Office Manager, an Administrative Assistant and 3 Records Clerks. Each of these individuals have their own duties to perform and the responsibilities that goes along with their position. The division also manages other aspects of the department such as; the Reserve Officer Organization, School Crossing Guards, the Negotiation Team, the Chaplain Program, the Explorer Program, the Color Guard Team, and the Crash Review Board.

Additionally, other functions that falls under the direction of the Support Services Division are; public information, preparing media releases, the Dare program, Book’em, reading program, clean team operations, records, evidence, arrestee processing, and neighborhood watch groups just to name a few.

Everyone in the Support Services Division is committed to providing the department and the citizens of Waynesboro with prompt, efficient, and professional service. The division and each person play a major role in the successes and creating a positive image and maintaining the department’s good reputation throughout the community and state.
