In Waynesboro, development review applications are accepted and processed by three separate Departments depending on the type of permit or review process required. A majority of these applications are then reviewed and commented upon by the staff members from these and other departments prior to approval.

The Planning Department (located in the Yancey Building at 503 W. Main Street, 540-942-6604) processes and manages the following applications

• Rezonings
• Conditional Use Permits
• Subdivision Plat Approval (For Major or Minor Subdivisions)
• Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance Text Amendments
• Certificate of Appropriateness to Demolish or Relocate an Historic Structur
• Vacation of Streets, Avenues or Alleys
• Power of Attorney Form

The submission deadline for Planning Department applications normally falls on the first Thursday of the month. Applications submitted by this deadline are typically scheduled for Public Hearing by the Planning Commission 10 weeks later. A separate Public Hearing by the City Council is held the following month.

The Building & Zoning Department, (located in the Gorsuch Building at 250 S. Wayne Avenue, 540-942-6628) processes and manages the following applications:

• Building Permits and Building Inspections
• Sign permits
