
Sheriff Joe Harris Jr.
The City Sheriff's office was established in 1948, the year Waynesboro was incorporated as a 1st Class City. The Sheriffís Office has the primary responsibility of service to the courts, providing security for the three city courts. Serves legal papers and civil process (approximately 10,000 in 1999, 12,500 in 2001) within the jurisdiction. Summons jurors and witnesses for civil and criminal trials. Conducts transports of both inmates and mental patients. Supervises eviction procedure (see eviction procedure) Supervises property repossessions. Executes court orders upon judgment and conducts Sheriffís Sales (public auctions) as necessary.
The Sheriff, four road deputies and one secretary/office deputy currently staff the Waynesboro Sheriff's office. Additionally, one auxiliary deputy supports the office.
Today, there are 123 Sheriffs serving the citizens of Virginia, one in each of the 95 counties and 28 major cities.
