Each summer the Generals recruit NCAA athletes from around the nation to travel to the city of Waynesboro, live with its citizens and represent the city in the league. Players need to have completed at least one year of college with eligibility still remaining to join the team which plays 44 regular season games from early June to late July with a championship play-off series extending into early August., finishing no later than August 10. The Waynesboro Generals are a member of the 12 team, summer collegiate wooden bat Valley Baseball League.

The Valley league is split into two divisions. Comprising the South Division are the Covington Lumberjacks, Harrisonburg Turks, New Market Rebels, Rockbridge Rapids, Staunton Braves, and Waynesboro Generals. The North Division includes the Fauquier Gators, Front Royal Cardinals, Haymarket Senators, Luray Wranglers, Winchester Royals, and Woodstock River Bandits. The Valley Baseball League is endorsed by the NCAA and sponsored in part by a donation from Major League Baseball. The VBL is affiliated with the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball, an organization comprised of eight summer collegiate baseball leagues.
