2019 General Reassessment

Reassessment notices for the 2019 General Reassessment were mailed January 25, 2019.  If you did not receive a notice, please call (540) 942-6722 to request a duplicate. If you received a notice for a property that has been sold, please forward the notice to the new owner or back to the Assessment Office.   

Information About Reassessment

State law requires all real property be assessed at 100% fair market value (Virginia Code §58.1-3201).  The last general reassessment in the City of Waynesboro was effective January 1, 2017.  The current reassessment reflects the present market value of your property. Every effort has been made to assess your property on a fair and equitable basis.  

All property appraisal cards, except those containing information made confidential by §58.1-3, are available for your review after the change of assessment notice is mailed.  You have a right to view and make copies of records maintained by our office pursuant to §58.1-3331 and §58.1-3332. The City Assessor’s Office is open Monday – Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Your Right to Appeal

As a taxpayer, you have the right to appeal your property tax assessment.  There are three levels of appeal:  Administrative, Board of Equalization, and Circuit Court. In order to appeal to Circuit Court, you must first have appealed to the Board of Equalization.  In each level, the burden of proof is on the individual appealing the assessment to show that the property in question is valued at more than its fair market value, that the assessment is not uniform in its application, or that the assessment is otherwise not equalized.

Gorsuch Municipal Building, 250 South Wayne Avenue, Suite 203, Waynesboro, Virginia, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., beginning Monday, January 28, 2019.  

Administrative Appeals

Administrative hearing dates are: January 28, 2019 - February 28, 2019.  Please call prior to February 21, 2019 to schedule an appointment.

Board of Equalization

Applications to appeal to the Board of Equalization must be filed in the Real Estate Assessment Office no later than April 1, 2019.  Applications are available on the City website or in the Real Estate Assessment Office.  

Public Hearing on Tax Rates

The date of the Public Hearing for the establishment of the 2019 real estate tax rate has not been set at this time.  Notice for the actual date of the public hearing will be advertised in The News Virginian in the spring of 2019, and on the City’s website
