The City Council of Waynesboro has heard from many concerned citizens regarding pre-filed gun control related legislation for the upcoming Virginia General Assembly Session. Due to the amount of interest on this topic, the City Council will hold a special hearing on Monday, January 13, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. at Kate Collins Middle School, located at 1625 Ivy Street in Waynesboro.
Citizens who wish to speak at the meeting are encouraged to signup in advance using an online form. A signup sheet for speakers will also be available at the door.

The doors to the auditorium will open at 6:30 p.m.
In accordance with the City Council’s normal public comment period guidelines, speakers will be limited to four (4) minutes in order to hear from as many people as possible.
The Council asks that speakers be concise and respectful in their comments.
It is the prerogative of the Mayor to close the hearing in order to allow for City Council discussion and potential action.
Public Schools are Gun-Free Zone under the Code of Virginia Section 18.2-301.2 which states: If any person knowingly possesses any firearm designed or intended to expel a projectile by action of an explosion of a combustible material while such person is upon (i) any public, private or religious elementary, middle or high school, including buildings and grounds; (ii) that portion of any property open to the public and then exclusively used for school-sponsored functions or extracurricular activities while such functions or activities are taking place; or (iii) any school bus owned or operated by any such school, he is guilty of a Class 6 felony.
There is no exception for concealed carry in a public school building.
