South River Greenway

Greenway Phase 3 - Loth Springs/Ridgeview Park Connector Update

In 2001, the City adopted a city-wide greenway plan. Since that time, 1.2 miles of the South River Greenway has been constructed and is utilized daily by pedestrians, cyclists, and those looking for river access (anglers and paddlers). Following the success and popularity of the current greenway trail, the City is pleased to announce it has been awarded $1,000,000 of funding from VDOT to design and construct the next major section of greenway, the Loth Springs/Ridgeview Park Connector Trail. This new section will allow for the safe and scenic connection of two of the City's most popular park facilities, the Greenway and Ridgeview Park.

Located along the South River in downtown Waynesboro

Open sunrise to sunset

The South River Greenway runs for 1.2 miles along the South River from the Loth Springs Parking area on Arch Avenue, behind the YMCA, to the Port Republic neighborhood. Parking at this end is available at the Shiloh Baptist Church auxiliary parking lot right at the trail head.  There is also parking available downtown at the Arch Avenue Parking Lot and the Invista lot.

These first phases of the project represent the considerable effort and dedication of citizens and city staff to achieve the greater goal of connecting the South River to downtown and multiple city parks while providing additional recreational and economic development opportunities.

Phase 1, a .88 mile section from Loth Springs to the Dominion Shelter was completed in 2011 using a combination of city funding and Federal Transportation Enhancement Grants. The first part of phase 2, a roughly .3 of a mile section, was completed in the spring of 2017 and added the connection to the Port Republic neighborhood.

The second part of phase 2, connecting Constitution Park to North Park, is currently under development, and future phases plan to extend the Greenway to Ridgeview Park, Basic Park, and eventually a series of trails connecting to the Crozet Tunnel from the future Sunset Park, the city's old landfill.
