Instructional Classes

All instructional classes meet at Rosenwald  community center, unless stated otherwise. Pre-registration required for all classes, but  participants may start any time.

Ballroom Dancing
These classes will give you confidence, grace, and lots of enjoyment as you head out to the dance floor. Learn popular dances such as the Foxtrot, Swing, Waltz, Cha-Cha, and the Rumba. Experienced instructor, Donald Dollins, will be offering two different level classes. One for beginners and another for intermediate dancers. For additional information and/or to register, please contact Mr. Dollins at 540-337-3173. Classes will be held at Westwood Elementary School on Wednesday and Friday evenings. The cost is $12 per lesson.

Beginning Square Dance Lessons
Offering learn-by-doing square dance lessons on Tuesdays at Kate Collins Middle School from 7 - 9 p.m. The instructor / caller will be George Jordan from Staunton, along with assistance from members of the Circle 8 Square Dance Club. Come give it a try. If square dancing is for you, sign up for 15 progressive lessons for $75 per person. Family rates are available. Square dancing is great family fun, great body and mind exercise, and a great way to meet and make new friends.

Fit For Life
No better time than the present to begin to get fit for life. This class can help you on your way by:
  • Burning fat
  • Relieving stress
  • Playing up-beat music
  • Doing great routines
  • Doing hi / low impact aerobics
  • Offering tips for weight reduction
Classes are taught by Penny Gilbert on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. The cost is $20 per month.

Introduction to Knitting & Crocheting
If you are a beginner, you can learn the basic stitches for both in one two-hour class. If you know the basics and simply need help with a pattern or project, bring it in for some assistance. Participants are welcome to bring their own yarn and needles, but it’s not required, as they will be provided to any student who needs them. The class is taught by Vickey Lawson.

Stretch & Tone
Though geared toward seniors, anyone can benefit from this morning ex­ercise program which provides a good opportunity for toning up problem areas as well as a chance to meet new friends. Rubber bands and mats are furnished for your convenience. The class is taught by Ann Hutchens on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 - 10 a.m. The cost is $15 per month.

Tai Chi for Beginners
The study of the Yang style six-form, the beginning set in the study of Yang Tai Chi. It is designed to increase energy and encourage focused concentration, leading to a sense of calm and well-being. The class is taught by Linda Smoke, Certified Instructor in Tai Chi for Diabetes and Tai Chi for Arthritis, on Mondays or Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. The cost is $29 per month for one day a week or $43 per month for twice a week.

Tai Chi for Health
Learn soft flowing, gentle movements which will improve your balance, flexibility, and coordination. These movements, combined with deep breathing, help to integrate mind and body, leading to clearer thinking, and improved concentration. Appropriate for all ages and activity levels. Join us for fun and relaxation with Linda Smoke, Certified Instructor in Tai Chi for Diabetes and Tai Chi for Arthritis, on Mondays and Thursdays at 9 -9:45 a.m. The cost is $29 per month for one day a week or $43 per month for twice a week.

This class is a fun mix of traditional and modern styles of yoga. A multi-level class, tailored to each student's needs. Yogis are encouraged to seek physical comfort and relaxation while moving through the postures, while meditating on the breathe, and cultivating peace of mind. Please wear comfortable clothing, and bring a yoga mat if possible. Open to adults and teens, all levels welcome. The class is taught by Elle D'Orado on Tuesdays from 6 - 7 p.m. at the Rosenwald Community Center. The cost is $28 per month to start at any time, and $8.50 per drop-in class.
