The Patrol Division is comprised of 32 full-time police officers. These officers are distributed into four patrol shifts which form a uniformed law enforcement group with the responsibility for responding to calls for service, traffic safety, and strategic proactive law enforcement. Uniformed patrol officers work an 11.5 hour rotating shift, 14 days per month. The four rotating shifts are allocated a sergeant, corporal, and five police officers. These units provide law enforcement services to our community 24 hours a day seven days a week.
Within this group we also have a Bicycle Unit comprised of 10 officers. The bicycle officers are distributed between the patrol shifts, and are deployed during the warmer months of the year. These officers target high crime areas, and assist with community policing initiatives.
Typical duties for the officers assigned to the uniformed patrol division include responding to calls for service, strategic traffic enforcement, criminal code enforcement, investigating traffic crashes, investigating reported criminal acts, order maintenance duties during special events, and various community policing initiatives.
We emphasize professionalism, team work, information sharing, and a strategic approach to the enforcement of the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The uniformed patrol division is managed and supervised in a cooperative team environment by the captain, sergeants, and corporals.
