As a result of the prolonged power outages from the ice storm many households have had to discard items from refrigerators and freezers. Assistance in replacing lost items may be available for individuals who qualify from Shenandoah Valley Social Services. Those households that do not qualify for food assistance should contact their homeowners or renters insurance company to determine if they have coverage for lost food.
Social Services SNAP Assistance Program Guidelines are listed below;
Households may request replacement for food purchased with SNAP Benefits (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ) that was destroyed due to power outages that exceed eight hours.
The household must report the outage within 10 days of the loss and complete and sign a Food Replacement Request attesting to the lost.
The household may received replacement of the actual value of the loss not to exceed the benefit amount received for one month. Once the agency verifies the power outage, replacement benefits will be issued.
