[ARCHIVED] Armed Robbery lands Local Men in Jail

Bellamy, Dewan Othell

The Waynesboro Police Department has arrested two city men after they beat up and robbed a Staunton man early yesterday morning. Officers nabbed Dewan Othell Bellamy, 23 years old, and Zaine Anthony Wells, Jr., 18 years old, shortly after the 23 year old victim reported his wallet with over $200 in cash stolen at knifepoint near Mountain View Apartments.

On September 3, 2015 at approximately 3:00 AM, officers responded to the 100 block of Edward Avenue for a report of an attempted residential break in. When officers arrived, they located the robbery victim in the driveway of the residence. He told them he had just been robbed nearby and was trying to get away from one of the assailants. He went to the first residence he could in an attempt to find help.

According to the victim, he was at the apartment complex with a female acquaintance and Wells and Bellamy. He offered the female gas money to drive him back to Staunton. When he had his wallet in his hand, Wells and Bellamy pulled knives and threatened him if he didn’t surrender all his cash which he did. Nonetheless, Bellamy struck him in the face. The victim then fled on foot with Bellamy in pursuit. The victim ran to the house on Edward Avenue where officers found him.

Since the victim knew his attackers by name and their location was nearby, officers quickly found them in a vehicle on Anthony Circle and arrested them. They also found the victim’s wallet between the suspects as well as knives and drug paraphernalia. Two females, also in the vehicle, were not implicated in the robbery and were released.

Both Bellamy and Wells face a felony count of armed robbery. Bellamy faces an additional misdemeanor count of assault & battery.

They are being held at Middle River Regional Jail without bond.
