In this fictional account, a Cincinnati librarian helps a group of homeless people take refuge at the public library in order to survive a brutal winter night. Director Emilio Estevez was inspired to create The Public after reading a librarian’s essay describing how funding cuts in the social safety net had turned public library staff de facto first responders in one of the last strongholds of shared space for people of all backgrounds, social classes and ethnic identities—the public library. Following the film, the audience is invited to participate in a discussion on how we address homelessness in our community, as well as the role of the Vallee Libraries. Staring Alec Baldwin, Emilio Estevez, Malone, Taylor Schilling, Christian Slater. Rated PG-13.
